Cost Manager – Capital Construction

We are searching for a talented Cost Manager with Capital Construction industry experience. This individual will be an integral part of the organization and will be responsible for ensuring accurate cost forecasting, tracking, and control across large-scale infrastructure and energy projects.

Focusing in the Utilities, Oil, Gas, Water and other Large Construction Projects, their Project Controls Professionals have worked on some of the largest Capital Construction Projects throughout the US.

Overview: As a Cost Manager, you will play a critical role in managing project financials to ensure accurate cost forecasting, tracking, and control across large-scale infrastructure and energy projects. You will collaborate closely with project teams, including project managers, engineers, and clients, to provide financial oversight and recommendations throughout the project lifecycle. A key part of the role will involve cost mapping, ensuring that project expenses are aligned with budget allocations and identifying any discrepancies or areas for optimization.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Budget Development & Management:
    • Lead the creation and ongoing management of project budgets, ensuring alignment with client objectives and project goals.
    • Assist in the preparation of cost estimates during the project’s early phases, including feasibility and conceptual stages.
  • Cost Control, Mapping & Reporting:
    • Develop and maintain cost management systems and tools to map expenditures against budgeted items, tracking committed and actual costs across various cost categories (labor, materials, subcontractors, etc.).
    • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of financial performance, with regular updates to project managers and senior leadership.
    • Perform detailed cost mapping to ensure all project costs are assigned to the correct work packages and budget lines, identifying areas where costs may be misallocated.
    • Provide financial analysis and cost tracking for labor, materials, subcontractor services, and other project expenditures.
  • Forecasting & Risk Management:
    • Perform regular forecasting of project costs, identifying potential risks and developing mitigation strategies to minimize financial impact.
    • Identify trends and provide cost control insights, including recommending changes to project scope or timing when necessary.
  • Procurement & Vendor Management:
    • Collaborate with procurement teams to manage contracts and vendor costs, ensuring that all financial aspects are well-documented and accounted for.
    • Negotiate contract terms related to costs and payments, ensuring that they are favorable to the project’s financial goals.
  • Cost Mapping for Resource Allocation:
    • Work with project managers to map costs to specific project phases or deliverables, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and financial data reflects the actual progress of the project.
    • Continuously monitor cost mappings and make adjustments as necessary to align with project changes or reforecasted budgets.
  • Stakeholder Communication:
    • Act as the financial point of contact for clients, providing detailed cost reporting and answering any inquiries related to project expenses.
    • Support project managers by providing regular cost analysis and financial updates in client-facing meetings.
  • Compliance & Best Practices:
    • Ensure all financial reporting and documentation adhere to Burns & McDonnell’s policies and industry standards.
    • Recommend and implement cost management best practices across multiple projects, particularly related to cost mapping processes.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in cost control, financial management, or project controls within a construction or engineering environment.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in cost management software (e.g., Oracle Primavera, SAP, MS Excel).
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on detail and accuracy.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams and clients.
    • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred:
  • Experience in managing costs for large-scale infrastructure, energy, or industrial projects.
  • Certification in cost engineering (e.g., AACE International’s Certified Cost Professional, CCP).
