About the Role

The CADD Specialist plays a pivotal role in the production and management of design and construction drawings and the program's CADD data platform. This position is part of the Rail and Operations Delivery Branch within the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s Office of Program Delivery.

Key Responsibilities
CADD Production and Coordination (100% Essential):
  • Develop and produce project designs, including horizontal layouts, vertical designs, utility planning, grading, and drainage designs, as well as construction plans.
  • Perform calculations and design tasks in compliance with project contract documents.
  • Utilize 2D and 3D CAD tools to execute tasks such as model development, updating designs, general arrangement drawing production, redlining, plotting, and drafting.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering principles, industry standards, and quality procedures.
  • Review and evaluate proposed freight railroad site plans, recommending changes based on site requirements.
  • Implement revisions to project drawings and calculations based on feedback from project team leaders.
  • Create and document design concepts, sketches, models, layouts, submittals, and design instructions.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Transportation project principles and practices, with expertise in railway and highway design across all phases (preliminary engineering, final design, and construction).
  • Civil engineering design, construction drawing standards, and database management.
Ability to:
  • Manage CADD production staff and oversee database/document control platforms like SharePoint and ProjectWise.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure timely, high-quality deliverables.
  • Establish and coordinate program-wide CAD standards and guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Education: Associate’s degree in Computer-Aided Design, Engineering Technology, or a similar field.
  • Experience: 7+ years in CAD production for rail design projects, with demonstrated knowledge of:
    • Civil 3D, AutoCAD, InRoads, MicroStation, and OpenRail Designer.
    • BIM workflows and digital coordination on rail projects.
    • Document control platforms like Bentley ProjectWise and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
  • Strong understanding of US DOT, FRA, or other client-specific CAD standards.
  • Leadership and teamwork skills with a self-motivated, results-driven mindset.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

Supervisory Role:
While this role does not have direct reports, the CADD Specialist may:
  • Provide guidance and leadership to contract team members.
  • Oversee and review the work products of others.
  • Promote positive Health & Safety processes and procedures across the team.

Impact of Role:
Accurate and high-quality CADD work ensures effective interdisciplinary coordination and successful integration of contracts. Errors in judgment or execution could lead to poor-quality outputs and project delays.

Work Environment:
This position is based in a climate-controlled office setting but may require occasional travel to project offices or worksites. Worksite visits may involve exposure to outdoor elements, uneven terrain, and live traffic.

Salary range is approximately $70,000 - $95,000
