A family office and their charitable and investment entities are searching for a talented Research Analyst with a PhD and a focus in Biotechnology to join their team. This position will provide services to the family’s investment organization which provides investments to encourage and support scientific innovation, education for science entrepreneurs and innovators, and high potential start-ups and organizations in life sciences and technology in the Chicago region and beyond.
This is a hybrid role located in Skokie.
Position Summary:
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and talented Research Analyst with a PhD in Life Sciences to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of life science and biotechnology research, and the ability to translate complex scientific concepts into actionable investment insights. The Research Analyst will be responsible for exercising strategic discretion and independent judgment with respect to important decisions with regard to significant financial investments. This position also requires an exceptional academic pedigree in the life sciences or biotechnology fields.

Responsibilities:
- Conduct in-depth research and analysis on life science and biotechnology startups, including evaluating scientific technologies, intellectual property, market potential, competitive landscape, and management teams.
- Develop and maintain a strong understanding of industry trends, emerging technologies, and scientific breakthroughs in the life science and biotechnology sectors and apply cutting-edge knowledge in identification and valuation of potential investments.
- Translate complex scientific concepts and research findings into clear and concise investment recommendations, supported by thorough analysis and strong arguments grounded in market and industry trends, strength of startup concept, financial data, and other relevant factors.
- Work closely with our investment team and key stakeholders to identify high-potential startups, develop investment theses, and support due diligence efforts.
- Prepare and deliver high-quality, original research reports, presentations, and investment recommendations to internal and external stakeholders with appropriate levels of detail depending on the context and featuring fundamental analysis and recommendations as well as evaluation of investment potential.
- Build and maintain relationships with key industry professionals, including scientists, entrepreneurs, executives, and referral sources within the life science and biotechnology sectors.
- Attend relevant conferences, workshops, and networking events to stay current with industry trends and advancements, to meet and diligence potential high-quality investment opportunities, and to represent the company's interests.
- PhD in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, or a related field is required.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience in financial analysis, valuation, and investment work, preferably in biotechnology, as well as research and consulting experience.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to synthesize complex information into clear, actionable insights, while maintaining an attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex scientific concepts to non-experts.
- Ability to quickly process information, facilitate meetings, and make decisions.
- Proven ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision, and ability to work collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team, with strong time management and prioritization skills.
- Passion for life sciences and biotechnology, and a genuine interest in the investment landscape of these sectors.
- Familiarity with financial modeling and valuation techniques is a plus.
- Proactive approach in identifying potential and actual problems and issues and resolving them.
- Ability to multitask and reprioritize as needed.
- Must remain up to date on industry trends.
